President of India-Pratibha Patil in her address to the Parliament's joint sitting on Monday, 12 March 2012 said that the Government has identified the five important challenges that the country faces today and will work towards it.

Briefing further, the President said that the first challenge would be the livelihood security for the vast majority of population in the country. She added that the Government would continue to work for removal of poverty, hunger and illiteracy. The second challenge would be to achieve economic security through rapid and broad-based development and creation of productive jobs.

The third challenge was to ensure energy security for our rapid growth. Addressing the fourth challenge, the President said that the Government would strive to realise development goals without jeopardizing ecological and environmental security. The fifth challenge would be guaranteeing internal and external security within the framework of a just, plural, secular and inclusive democracy.

The budget session of the parliament began today with the President addressing a joint session of the parliament. The President also said that the government is confident that it will soon steer the country back to the high growth trajectory of 8 to 9%.
