Market Commentary - Mid-Session

NIFTY stays slightly lower after falling in the previous session

The key equity barometers traded with minor losses in morning trades. Nifty moved in a range of 23890-23758. Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare Index and Nifty Auto shares gained, while Nifty Media and Nifty IT shares declined.


NIFTY edged lower 0.54% in last session and plunged 2.91% over last one-week.


At 12:15 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, inched down 446.96 points or 0.58% to 76,068.47. The Nifty 50 index posted modest losses of 110.60 points or 0.46% to 23,787.10.


The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index moved lower by 0.57% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index posted modest gains of 0.05%.


The market breadth was fragile. On the BSE, 2257 shares rose and 2715 shares retreated. A total of 278 shares were unchanged.


Nifty Pharma index added 0.57% to 26629. The index has posted modest losses of 0.45% in last one month and posted strong gains of 20.82% over last one year. Wockhardt, climbing 6.16%, led the gainers followed by Zydus Lifesci., adding 3.47% and Piramal Pharma, edging up 2.19%, respectively. Out of 20 index constituents, 12 are reporting gains today.


Nifty Healthcare Index index moved higher by 0.42% to 16477. The index has drifted lower by 2.02% in last one month and advanced 13.23% over last one year. Zydus Lifesci., inching higher 3.47%, led the gainers followed by Piramal Pharma, up 2.19% and Divi's Lab., gaining 1.63%, respectively. Out of 20 index constituents, 11 are reporting gains today.


Nifty Media index shed 2.80%. The index has edged lower 2.19% in last one month and posted modest losses of 2.83% over last one year. PVR Inox, moving down 6.49%, led the losers followed by Zee Entertainmen, moving lower 5.46% and Sun TV Network, edging lower 2.97%, respectively. Out of 10 index constituents, 7 are reporting loss today.


Asian markets climbed on Monday. China’s Shanghai composite is modestly higher by 0.10%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is lower by 0.72%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 is substantially higher by 2.12%.


In Europe, German DAX eased 0.20%, UK’s FTSE 100 remained flat and French CAC drifted lower 0.09%.


In Commodities, MCX Crude oil advanced 1.74% to trade at Rs 8,567 per barrel.
